Property crime is a serious problem for college campuses. There were about 14,000 burglaries on U.S. college campuses in 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security division. The same year there were 3,100 motor vehicle thefts, 1,300 robberies and 610 arson crimes on campus.

According to research conducted by Kensington, one laptop is stolen every 53 seconds. The same study also shows that 70 million smartphones are lost each year, with only 7 percent being recovered.

In 2010, of the 92,695 reported college and university campus crimes 97% of these were property crimes. Of property crimes, 86 percent were thefts, followed by burglaries at 12 percent.
